Review ~ The Tide of War by Lori Witt

Title: The Tide of War
Author: Lori A. Witt
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action/Adventure
Expected Release June 22, 2015
 Riptide Publishing.

Lieutenant Commander Kyle West is one of Earth Fleet’s greatest fighter pilots. Every day, he leads his squadron into battle over Earth’s cities in a seemingly endless war against a vicious alien race, defending his home and his loved ones.

Millions of miles away, the Fleet’s Elite Squadron attacks from another angle, engaging the enemy on its home turf. Casualties are high, and the Squadron needs more of the Fleet’s very best. But joining the Elite is a death sentence—a surety Kyle isn’t willing to face. Until a devastating attack wipes out the family he refused to leave.

Commander Andrei Dezhnyov, an Elite Squadron gunner, isn’t sure what to make of the cocky new American pilot. Kyle is equally uncertain about the snarly Russian, but as they warm up to each other, their tentative alliance becomes a deep bond—one that endangers them both when a daring and disobedient rescue reveals secrets that call into question everything they’ve ever believed about their enemy. Secrets that their superiors would kill to protect.

I went into this book with my eyes wide shut.  Fighter pilots and gunners fighting off an alien force that is threatening to destroy Earth.  Where men and women marry to cover their "secrets" and men and women fight and flight side by side.
Loved all the action and the visual effects written in this book, they were without a doubt truly believable.  I felt all the G-forces and I myself could not see for the black haze surrounding Menar.

Loved the relationship between Kyle and Emily,  though I think that Andrei's and Ogrufina seemed stronger.  This book is mind blowing toward the end, I had to pick my jaw off the floor, flip back a couple of pages, just to make sure I missed something when the plot was revealed.

This is not a erotic book, all sex scenes are off the page but the story is great, the detailing is second to none and I'm still in "holy shit" mode at the books end.

Wow....

What just happened? One minute I'm reading about Elite fighters fighting lizard "people", and the next....
Well, read it to find out. Haha!!

I think if you're not a sci-fi reader, you should still read this book. I'm not heavy on the genre, but this...it blew my mind. It definitely isn't what you think it is.

West and Blaine join the Elite after tragedy hits home. They're sent to another planet to hit the aliens where it hurts. I won't lie, getting into this book took a little longer than expected, though it felt a little slow, I was still very curious and intrigued by the notion of the book.

I'm sure glad I stuck with it. Once they arrive and join the squadron, things start really picking up. Kyle meets his squadron leader Andrei and thongs get a bit more " heated". In the air and in Epsilon. Things aren't as they seem though, and it takes Andrei and Ogrufenka going down for things to really get "strange".

" What goods a gunner without his pilot "

It took a minute for my brain to wrap around the info as it was coming to me. I think I was as confused as Blaine was during everything. I think that was the beauty of the story. Political propaganda at its finest.

Though it was slow going into it for me, I give it 4 stars, mainly for originality and blowing my freaking mind

Life, Some Assembly Required Kaje Harper

Finding love in the ashes was easy. Building a life together? Don’t make Fate laugh.

After spending the first part of his life chasing pretty girls, love has finally come to Ryan in the form of John, a tall, lanky, red-headed landscape architect with wide shoulders and a five-o’clock shadow.

For the first time in his life, love feels easy. Hell, he even ran into a burning building for John and his son, and he’d do it again if he had to. But telling his father and brothers “I’m gay. I’ve met a man”? That’s a bumpy ride he’s not looking forward to.

For John, loving Ryan is as natural as breathing. Now if only the rest of his life would fall into place. Dealing with his teen son is complicated enough, but with his ex-wife causing trouble and his daughter wanting to move in, John’s house—and his relationship with Ryan—threaten to split at the seams.

Would one month without a new surprise knocking him upside the heart be asking too much? If the sound of Fate’s laughter is any indication, the answer must be yes…

Product Warnings
Contains two formerly straight guys learning to navigate the gay-guy waters, sometimes without a paddle. Plus six kinds of family ensuring nothing comes easy.

Imperfectly Perfect

So The Rebuilding Year left off with Ryan telling his father that he had met someone “Dad, I’ve met this man….”.  This book was a little harder to read than Book 1, simply because of the adversity Ryan and John faced with each of their families.

I have to tell you I loved John’s daughter Torey, she was the shizznick in this book.   Thought Ryan’s brother Brent was a big ole ass and I could just kiss Drew.
This book takes through a pending divorce, one nasty ass homophobic soon-to-be ex-husband and a very pregnant ex-wife.

Dear Cheesus lets talk about Cynthia the EX, WTH?  She cheats, she divorces, she takes the kids to LA, and then she comes full circle and ask a question like that toward the end?  She really was no shame, and someone who really got on my last nerve.

I really enjoyed The Rebuilding Year, I thought this book kind of dragged in certain areas, but overall I really enjoyed “the joys of first time gay sex”.

Kick at the Darkness by Keira Andrews

To live through the zombie apocalypse they have to survive each other first.

College freshman Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He humiliated himself trying to pick up a cute guy, he hasn’t made any friends at school, and his stupidly hot jerk of a TA gave him a crappy grade on his paper. He’s going to drop Adam Hawkins’ film class and start fresh tomorrow after he’s had a good sulk.

But Parker’s about to find out what a bad day really looks like—if he can survive the night.

A virus is unleashed, transforming infected people into zombie-like killers. After these quick and deadly creepers swarm campus, Parker only escapes thanks to Adam swooping him onto the back of his trusty motorcycle. Now they're on the run—and stuck with each other.

When they’re not bickering, they’re fighting off the infected in a bloody battle for survival. Their only hope is to head east to Parker's family, but orphaned Adam has a secret he’s not sure Parker will accept: he’s a werewolf. Can they trust each other enough to find some light in these dark days?

So I’m a little late on the Keira bandwagon, this being my first by read by her {bad Cheryl} but this one really sparked my interest at the word Zombie.  From page freaking one I was smirking at Parker, and I said so many OMG I can’t EVEN begin to count.  This dude was a RIOT!  Absolutely every word out of his mouth had me snorting at 1 am in the morning.  His “inner goddess” as I would call it, was the best I’ve ever read as an internal monologue.  The first image to pop into my head was Stiles Stilinski, and I Lurve me some Stiles, and then when the paranormal aspect popped up, it was like BAM!

This book literally can be read as a movie with all the detail that the author cultivates into the story,  I loved everything about how the story adapted and moved the reader along with Adam and Parker.  I’m really hoping this is a HFN and we get more of Parker and Adam in the future.

SLOAN JOHNSON'S WILD PITCH COVER REVEAL with Chance to Win ARC

Homeruns Series #1 Wild Pitch by Sloan Johnson

Coming June 18, 2015

Wild Pitch by Sloan Johnson

Synopsis:

There’s never been any question in Sean Tucker’s mind that he’d do whatever it took to make it to the major leagues and be one of the best pitchers of his time. The day he acknowledged to himself that he was gay was also the day he vowed to stay in the closet in order to chase his dreams. The problem is, he never counted on Mason Atley. Sean showed rookie short stop Mason Atley the ropes, both on the field and off. The two forged a friendship which continued as both of them moved through the ranks of the farm system and into the majors. Unfortunately, there’s always been one secret Mason never felt he could share with Sean. Until now. For seven years, Sean lived with the fact that he loved a man who would never reciprocate. When Mason admits that he’s always known he’s bisexual but has never allowed himself to pursue a relationship with a man, will Sean be able to put aside his reservations about starting a relationship with the friend he’d always assumed was straight? And more importantly, will they be able to find a way to stay together when their careers keep them apart more than they can be together?

Excerpt:

I waited until we’d polished off the entire pizza and the dishes were rinsed in the sink before confronting Sean about what I assumed was weighing on his mind. “So, are you still going to tell me you and Eric were just friends?” I asked, handing him a second beer. I’d switched to soda, on the off chance that he wanted to head back to the hotel. The only thing that’d make today worse was a DUI. “We were. We are,” he protested. His gaze bounced around the room, but never in my direction. “Bullshit. Trades are part of the game. We both know that, and yet Eric leaving managed to get into your head and throw off your game today. You can tell yourself whatever you want, but I know you better than that,” I reminded him. We’d lived together for the better part of a year, and not once was he able to pull the wool over my eyes. “Fine,” he grumbled, taking a long draw off his beer. I thought that was the closest I’d get to an admission from him as he rubbed the back of his neck. Then he crooked a finger against the side of his chin, twisting to the left, then the right, then the left again to crack his neck. As I watched him go through his nervous routine, I regretted pushing him when he obviously wasn’t ready. Something inside of him clicked and he started to talk again. “There may have been benefits included, but really, it wasn’t more than that. Neither of us are stupid enough to get involved with a teammate, so we settled for getting cozy in the closet when the urge struck. We figured it worked pretty damn well that the two gay guys wound up in the same room. What we did was no different from the shit the rest of the guys were doing, except we didn’t have to go out and find a new trick in each town.” “So you fucked and you were close enough that his leaving got to you, but you’re going to tell me you weren’t involved?” I shouldn’t push the issue, but I was pissed. I hated the fact that he was obviously in denial about what they meant to one another. “Yes, Mason, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Look, just because I don’t want a relationship doesn’t mean I don’t want to get laid every once in a while,” he argued. “And not wanting a commitment doesn’t mean I want a random stranger. Eric understood that and respected it. He’s in the same boat as me and we did what needed to be done.” “Then why the head trip? Ever since I’ve known you, you’ve sworn you’d never do anything that fucked with your game. What’s so special about him that he was worth it?” As I ranted, I thought I sounded like the scorned friend who’d never be what Sean needed. And how could I be when he had no clue that he was so much more than my just my best friend? Sean jumped off the couch and started pacing around the room, squeezing the back of his neck. “Because other than you, he’s the only person who’s come close to understanding how much baseball means to me,” he admitted. “I knew he wasn’t cut out for no-strings sex but he was willing to settle for that for me. He’s a good guy and yeah, I’m going to miss him. There, are you happy now?”

About the Author

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass. When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after. Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book? Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.
